April Showers Auction Downpours Generosity

Over 250 parents teachers and friends of our school wined, dined, and opened their hearts and wallets at the Adams Elementary April Showers auction. Earlier in the day, volunteers transformed the Norwegian decor of Ballard's own Lief Erikson Hall into a dazzling display of creativity and inventiveness. Rainbows, clouds, and silvery rain streamers covered the central stage and beverage areas. The front stage area was home to giant dragonfly and butterfly metal sculptures that will soon become part of our new playground and grounds improvement. Eight enormous colorful patio umbrellas, each beautifully painted and decorated by our teachers and artists, continued the April Showers theme.  Each of the twenty-five tables featured a child's rainboot and a unique theme, with special centerpieces and an array of fun adornments. Some of the themes included beautiful spring flower arrangements, a Margarita table, Swan Lake, a Midsummer Night's Dream (in honor of our recent hit production), a fondue table, a Japanese rock garden, and a magician's table. Later in the evening, the patio umbrellas and table decorations were auctioned as part of the evening's fundraising.

At five o'clock, our numerous kind and capable volunteers manned the computers, registration files, and serving trays as people streamed in, dressed in their finest clothing. Serenaded by the sweet strains of live music from The Smokin' Hotties, bidders browsed the array of treasures along the walls that made up the "Super" Silent Auction.

At 6:30, the program kicked off, with a warm welcome by PTA President Mary Jereczek, who recognized Carolyn Stalter for her invaluable leadership as Auction Chair with a special pair of cowboy style rain boots. Carolyn then recognized Thalia Pearce, the PTA Fundraising Vice-President for her many amazing contributions to Adams with a pair of beautiful poster prints from school events, designed by Donna Izenas.

In a moment of hilarity, several Adams PTA members appeared, singing the Adams Family theme song and dressed as the characters from the TV show. Then, Alison Krupnick took the stage as our witty host, slapped on a sombrero, auctioned off of Mexican vacation, and the live auction was off and running.

As they bid, attendees enjoyed a delicious salmon dinner, prepared by Nell's Restaurant, who generously donated the dinner for 250 for the third in a row. Mid-way through the auction, bidding was closed on the delicious elaborate deserts donated and mostly prepared by Adams parents. In order, from high bid to low, each table got to "dash" for a sweet treasure.

Among the highlights of the live auction were several acts of inspiring spontaneous generosity in which donors of several high-dollar items such as vacation packages, a sailboat cruise, a picnic drive in a vintage automobile, and Principal For The Day offered a second and sometimes third package for sale, making a significant impact on the amount of money raised during the evening. The winner of the amazing Golden Boot raffle redonated the boot, filled with gift certificates, cash, and goods for an instant auction to help boost the money raised for the Joseph Skillings Fund. To everyone's happiness, the "Fund A Need" part of the auction exceeded the goal set for the evening, giving our playground and grounds improvement project meaningful support.

Round after round of delighted applause ensued throughout the evening as people radiated bright caring and appreciation of our school by bidding on the amazing array of over 40 offerings, including several stunning art projects by our talented students and teachers. As the evening wound down, attendees danced to the infectious music of Mid-Wife Crisis, and all agreed the 2008 April Showers Adams School Auction was a huge success. In our next issue, we will report more on the actual funds raised.

Best,

Family FUNdraiser Silent Auction, Saturday, April 12, 2008   at the Ballard Community Center, 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
FUN was defintely had by all at the Silent Auction on April 12th.  It turned out to be a beautiful sunny hot spring day and although many choose to enjoy the beautiful weather, many also came and went home with armloads of amazing items at bargain prices.  The BCC gym was transformed by Timmi Harrop with amazing raining clouds and surrounded us with spring scenes of green grass, playful yellow ducks, and colorful flowers everywhere.  The energy in the room was elevated by the arrival of Ms. W in full disco outfit who danced the hot afternoon away with her likewise spirted son.  Ms. W enjoyment made the event very fun, playing her personal collection of disco tunes and handing out 38 bottles of wine during the Wine Walk.  There are a few auction items not picked up stored in Room 204.  Jen Burke is distributing these and will contact winning bidders to find out how you'd like to collect your items.  THANKS to all the volunteers who made the event work so smoothly!
